There are many groups within NASA that are already working hard on teacher education. One of the fastest growing is the National Space Grant College Program. Here we see Rachel Friedman, working as part of the Hawaii Space Grant College, leading a discussion with a group of high school teachers on the use of a Jello model to show the effects of magma intrusion on the distribution of eruptions on a volcano. Colored water is injected into a clear Jello mold that has the shape of a volcano. Because it is transparent, the Jello lets one observe the subsurface passage of "magma," similar to the process associated with a volcanic rift zone. Photo by Pete Mouginis-Mark.
