DAVE SCHNEIDER (U.S. Geological Survey, Alaska Volcano Observatory)
Develop and use methods for inferring characteristics of
volcanic clouds (such as ash size and abundance, H2SO4 aerosol size and abundance) from MODIS, HIRS, or AVHRR observations. Test the models using other sources of
information (aircraft sampling, ground-based measurements, etc.)
Study the coherence of ash, aerosols, and volcanic gases
in plumes using different sensors or channels which are sensitive to different plume
components.
Improve our ability to detect the edges of plumes by
remote sensing, and investigate the opacity and transparency of volcanic clouds.
Develop software to display time-series maps of plume
boundaries to track their dispersal, using radiances measured by MODIS.
Apply remote sensing tools to volcanic hazards mitigation
at Santa María volcano in Guatemala.
