Sample Image Karymsky Volcano, Kamchatka (273K image)
In April 1994, the Space Shuttle Endeavor carried an imaging radar system called SIR-C / X-SAR. The X-SAR
experiment operated at 3 cm wavelength, and has produced some interesting images of volcanoes in
Kamchatka. This is an area where several of the Volcanology IDS Team conducted field work in 1993,
and we are hoping to use these images to further understand the geology of this area which has
rarely been visited by western volcanologists.
Pre-launch EOS activities
Long-term (1984-1994) thermal and atmospheric emission
monitoring of Etna from Landsat images, supplemented by
AVHRR and other remote sensing data, and study of the correlation between thermal, volcanic
gas, and aerosol records. Development of methods for combining diverse data sets and statistical
analysis of fluctuations in remote sensing obervations with time. Assess the effects of time
frequency of observations and viewing geometry on the overall interpretation.
Arrange and participate in the 1993 Kamchatka aircraft
remote sensing deployment (baseline dataset for future comparisons, low-temperature thermal
anomalies). TIMS images (6 bands 8-12 micrometers) and Zeiss
color air photos.
EOS mission activities
Continue time-series studies of thermal activity and gas
and aerosol emissions at other volcanoes, using primarily
ASTER and MODIS.
